Life’s work, 1977 (+18)

25.10.1977
Galeria Teatru STU, Kraków,

Manifestation description:

In the middle of the room on the floor there is a strip of jute, bearing the inscription WORK OF LIFE; next to it: a block of wood, an axe, and cups of paint. When the audience arrives, the artist strips naked, then ties a piece of white fabric around his hips. He applies white paint to the soles of his feet and imprints marks running around the jute. He goes inside this circle, takes an axe and splits the block of wood in half. On the inside walls of the split wood, he paints his signature and the current date with green paint. He then removes the band from his hips and ties the two pieces of the block together in such a way that the inscriptions hide inside. He overlays the jute with the inscription LIFE’S WORK, paints the soles of his feet with green paint and, imprinting his footprints, walks out of the white circle.
