Material Proof II

4 V 2002

Trace Gallery, Cardiff

Description of the manifestation:

Location: A private, non-commercial gallery with an invited audience connected to the university where Andre Stitt lectures. In the center of the room stand two small tables: one with a bottle of vodka and glasses, the other with a chess set. Between the tables, on a white plinth, lies a large, smooth stone shaped by Atlantic tides. It was found at sea and carried up a high cliff by Andre Stitt’s young assistant.

Action: This was a repetition of the action performed in Aichi, Japan (March 1, 2002). The difference was that the artist wove green twigs into the knots of the rope. The result of the action was a material document: a stone from the ocean floor placed on a white plinth, bearing a red-and-white phallic imprint and decorated with a wreath made of rope intertwined with green branches.

Commentary by Jerzy Bereś: Zbigniew Warpechowski decided that the beautiful monument should remain in Wales because, unfortunately, it was too heavy to transport back to Poland.
