Dialogue with Ignacy Witkiewicz

April 1980

Pryzmat Gallery, Kraków

Manifestation description:

In the corner of the gallery there are three tables, a short distance apart. They are lined up in a row. Next to them are works by other artists participating in the exhibition. The tables are covered with white fabric, hanging low in front. On the hanging parts of the fabric there are black inscriptions. The first one bears the inscription COMPANY. This table is empty. The middle one, with the fabric hanging the most, bears the inscription DIALOGUE WITH IGNACY WITKIEWICZ. On the table there are a bottle of vodka and a row of glasses. The last fabric bears the inscription FORM. On this table lies a cobblestone, a granite cube. The artist can be seen among the artists and invited guests arriving for the opening of the exhibition.  He has a white cloth tied around his hips, with the word CONTENT written on the front. This is his only garment.

ACTION. The artist walks up to the first table and stops in front of it. The table bears the inscription COMPANY. He picks up a paintbrush, dips it in paint and puts a large green signature on the white tablecloth. He then moves to the area behind the tables. He stands behind the middle table, opens a bottle and pours vodka into glasses. After pouring each glass, he paints a section of a snakelike line on his chest with green paint. At some point, he removes the cloth from his hips, folds it several times so that it takes the shape of a long rectangle. He places it in front of the glasses in such a way that the word CONTENT is visible. Naked he continues pouring vodka and painting the green line. He repeats this sequence of actions until all vodka is spilled into glasses and the green question mark is visible on his chest. He then paints a dot on his phallus. He picks up the fabric with the word CONTENT and places it on top of the full glasses. He caps the empty bottle and walks with it to the third table bearing the inscription FORM. He smashes the bottle against a stone and leaves the room.
