Material Proof: Out of Action
22 X 2000
Performance Art Center, Cultural Center, Lublin
as part of the European Festival of Performance Art and New Media “ArtKontakt” (X 2000)
Description of the manifestation:
In the room stands a table with a bottle of Żubrówka vodka, vodka glasses, and a cut flower.
The artist enters, pushing a wooden structure on wheels. The wheels are two slices cut from an unbarked tree trunk. A triangular sheet with the word ACTION hangs on the structure. The artist is nearly naked, with a flat piece of wood suspended from his hips. He places the structure in the center of the room and approaches the table. He pours Żubrówka into the glasses and, while doing so, paints letters forming the word OUT on the front of his body. He paints the number 70 on his back, explaining that this is his age. While filling the glasses, he paints the letters OF on the wooden hip guard. When the vodka is poured, the artist removes the hip guard and places it on the floor. He applies white and red paint to his penis. He approaches the wooden structure and imprints the penis onto the sheet marked ACTION. He then stands the structure upright; a pole weighted with the hip guard lifts the sheet with the imprint high into the air. The word OUT appears on the artist’s body, while OF ACTION appears on the structure, which serves as a material document. The artist places the flower in a bottle and sets it in front of his work. He invites the audience to enjoy a drink.
