19 IX 1988

Slaughterhouse Gallery, London
as part of the Edge 88.the International Experiment in Art meeting (13-25 X)

Description of the manifestation:

A table stands in the room with a container of paint on it. The artist waits naked until the room fills with the audience. He then announces that there will be no performance because he does not do performances, but that he will paint a painting for the audience to evaluate. He takes a brush and, with white paint, draws a wavy line across his chest. He turns his back to the audience and, with a quick brushstroke, paints a red stripe on his back. He then turns to the front again and continues the wavy white line. He turns his back once more and adds another red streak. He repeats these actions until a white question mark appears on the front of his body, while his back becomes covered with red streaks. Finally, he paints a red-and-white dot on his penis – this is the dot of the question mark. He then asks the audience to evaluate the painting. He states that, in his opinion, the painting is good. A discussion follows, but it does not lead to a satisfactory conclusion. The artist calls for a vote. The announcement of the result ends the manifestation.
