Praying for Rain

summer 1977

Fields of Prądnik, Kraków

Maria Pinińska-Bereś:

In the green fields of Prądnik, Kraków, viewed by a small group of people, I kneel down in a meadow, pressing my hands and face against the grass. I pick up stones lying there and throw them away, delineating a kind of circle. Then, using a knife, I uproot and remove the grass, forming a circle of bare earth. I stick pink flags where the stones have landed. I remove my sandals and flatten the ground with my feet. Then I lie down in the middle, facing the sky, my hands cupped. I wait for rain.
