Transubstantiation
8 III 2002
Goudo neon Hall, Nagano, Japonia
manifestation as part of The 9th Nippon International Performance Art Festival (22 II – 8 III)
Description of the manifestation:
Two small tables covered with white cloth stand in the hall. Between the tables, set back against the wall, is a chair with a bowl of warm water and soap on it. On the table to the left is sliced bread, and on the other table are vodka and vodka glasses.
The artist enters wearing only a towel around his waist. He emphasizes that the manifestation will include references to Christian symbolism and therefore invites those gathered to ask questions if anything is unclear. He begins painting slices of bread with blue paint and arranges them in a rosette on a white tablecloth. He then applies blue paint to his left hand and folds his hands as if in prayer, turning both hands blue. He presses them onto the white cloth on either side of the bread rosette. He goes to the bowl of water and washes his hands with soap. He wipes them with the towel around his hips and hangs the towel on the back of the chair. Naked, he walks to the table with vodka and glasses. As the vodka is poured into the glasses, a symbolic line of red paint is drawn across the author’s body, from his face to his feet. At the end of the manifestation, the author invites those gathered to view the BEAUTIFUL ALTAR at the first table and drink vodka at the CLEAN ALTAR.
