Woman in a Window

Maria Pinińska-Bereś:
It was a time when I was making objects in the shape of windows. I’d written a poem calledWoman in aWindow, andWindow and Demons had recently been stolen from the Krzysztofory Gallery.
A mini-performance: a window is hanging in front of the wall. I enter the space between them dressed in white, in my traditional long dress, holding a pink word “in” (in Polish). The word “kobieta” [woman] has been written on the window’s upper frame, and “oknie” [window, in the locative case] on the lower one. I start a monologue, repeating the words “woman in” while searching for the right place for the “in” on the glass. I utter the words in many different spontaneous tones until I find the right place for the mobile “in.” Then I utter the whole phrase, “Woman in a window”, and paste the word to the window pane. In the exhibition, the window is accompanied by a photograph showing the “Woman in a window” holding the “in.”
